The Samvera Community is seeking a volunteer Hyrax Technical Lead for 2026, and we’re excited to offer mentorship and training for the role in 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for a developer to gain valuable experience in community leadership, technical decision-making, and open-source contribution, all with the support of a skilled and collaborative team.

If you’re a developer working at an institution that has implemented Hyrax, this role could be a perfect fit for you. It’s ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, learning on the go, and contributing to the evolution of technical design and architecture.

Why Consider This Role?

  • Mentorship & Training

: Work directly with experienced leaders in the Hyrax community.

  • Leadership Experience

: Develop your skills in making impactful decisions for an active open-source project.

  • Tailored Expertise Welcome

: Whether your strengths lie in deployments, databases, Ruby programming, or another area, we can adapt the role to suit your expertise.

The Current Team

In 2025, Randall Floyd (Indiana University) will serve as Hyrax Technical Lead, with Indiana University generously supporting him at 40% time and Daniel Pierce contributing 25% of his time to Hyrax maintenance. Together with Nicholas Homenda (Tufts University), the team will provide strong leadership to ensure a smooth transition for the incoming 2026 Tech Lead.

However, Indiana University will conclude its staffing for Hyrax technical leadership after 2025, which is why we’re now looking for someone to step into the role for 2026.

Your Opportunity as a “Tech Lead in Training”

To make the transition manageable, we’re offering a Hyrax Tech Lead mentorship opportunity in 2025. This role allows you to:

  • Commit a portion of your time to Hyrax maintenance. The specifics can be arranged with your institution based on your local development schedule, but ideally this would be a percentage of your time during the Maintenance Working Group sprints every two weeks.

  • Gain hands-on leadership experience under the guidance of Randall and Daniel.

  • Receive a free seat in any developer training offered by the Samvera Community in 2025.

This is your chance to step into an important leadership position with the full backing of the Hyrax Maintenance Working Group and the Hyrax Interest Group, who will support you by sharing responsibilities.

How to Get Involved

If you’re interested in becoming the Hyrax Tech Lead in Training, please fill out this form by February 21, 2025.

Have questions? Feel free to reach out to me or join us at the Hyrax Interest Group call on February 12th to learn more about the role.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to shape the future of Hyrax while growing your skills and impact in the Samvera Community.
